Barbara James To All Instructors
Barbara James started her musical journey with a ¾ violin and a love of
music in Oklahoma City. She graduated summa cum laude with a
Bachelor’s degree in instrumental music from the University of Central
Oklahoma. She received her Masters in Computer Education from Lesley
University in 1997.
In 1986, Barbara’s teaching career began in the Edmond Public Schools in
Edmond, Oklahoma. One year later, she moved to Las Vegas to continue
teaching orchestra. During her 30 years in the Clark County School
District, Barbara has been avid supporter of string education. She has
judged at the district and regional Solo and Ensemble Festivals, CCSD
Middle School Orchestra Festival and also judging for All State auditions.
She also conducted the Washoe County School District Middle School
Honor Orchestra in 2022.
She has been a member of the Nevada chapter of the American String
Teachers Association for over 35 years and served as treasurer of Nevada
ASTA for 16 years. She has been active in the Las Vegas Youth Orchestra
program as librarian, violin coach, and conductor. Barbara served as the
CCSD Honor Orchestra Chairperson from 2008 to 2014.
Ms. James retired in 2017 from CCSD which gives her more time to read
books, volunteer at Pawtastic Friends (training center for shelter dogs),
solve puzzles, and ride her Harley.
