Ages 9-18

Band 1 Each semester we kick off another new class of band students! Students ages 9-18 will learn their instrument from the VERY BEGINNING, absolutely no previous knowledge required! The Band 1 class performs a short family presentation on the last day of class. Instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, and French horn. Instrument rentals are available through our partner, Music and Arts. SNHPA also owns a limited number of instruments available for use on a first-come, first-served basis. Band 1 students perform on the Family Showcase concerts the last week of classes in both Winter and Spring. It is highly recommended that this class be paired with Beginning Music Theory.

Beginning Music Theory is required for ALL instrument ensemble students in Level 1 or Level 2. Students are allowed to test out of Beginning Music Theory. If tested and recommended for Intermediate Music Theory level or above, they may choose to take or not take Music Theory.  Theory placement tests can be taken at the open house.

Band 2 Once students know the fundamentals of their instruments, they are placed into an ensemble. This class explores techniques for playing parts within a group for band instruments and includes further development as an individual on the instrument. Band 2 students perform on the Family Showcase concerts the last week of classes in both Winter and Spring. Instruments include flute, clarinet, saxophone, oboe, bassoon, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, tuba, French horn, percussion. Instrument rentals are available through our partner, Music and Arts.

*Concert Band (Intermediate Band) Concert Band is for students who have at least one year ensemble experience on their instrument and are working on improving their overall ensemble skills. This fun class dives into more advanced music reading skills, instrument specific techniques, and the students cover a wide range of musical styles. Intermediate Band students perform on the Winter and Spring concerts and may be eligible for referral to the NMEA All-State Bands and well as the CCSD Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Most students benefit from performing in the Intermediate Band for more than one season.

*Jazz Band  The Jazz Band is an auditioned group that works on music in a fast-paced setting in the jazz style. Instruments of the Jazz Band include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum set, guitar, string bass and piano. In addition to the Winter and Spring concerts, the Jazz Band is invited to perform on such events as community jazz festivals, parades, and the CCSD Solo and Ensemble festival. Auditions are held before classes begin each semester, in August and January.
