String Orchestra Instruments

 

Violin, Viola, Cello and Bass

Ages 9-18

Strings 1 This class is for students who have no previous experience and will teach from the VERY BEGINNING. This semester-long class will introduce the basics of the instrument and fundamental music reading. The Strings 1 class presents a Family Showcase presentation on the last day of class. Instruments include violin, viola, cello and upright bass. It is highly recommended that the students enroll in Beginning Music Theory in the same semester. Instrument rentals are available through our partner, Music and Arts.

Beginning Music Theory is required for ALL instrument ensemble students in Level 1 or Level 2. Students are allowed to test out of Beginning Music Theory. If tested and recommended for Intermediate Music Theory level or above, they may choose to take or not take Music Theory.  Theory placement tests can be taken at the open house.

Strings 2  This class introduces students to performing in an ensemble and expands the understanding of the fundamentals of the instrument, learning music that is played unison as well as in parts. Students are placed by teacher recommendation. Strings 2 class presents a Family Showcase presentation on the last day of class. Instruments include violin, viola, cello and upright bass. Instrument rentals are available through our partner, Music and Arts.

Beginning Music Theory is required for ALL instrument ensemble students in Level 1 or Level 2. Students are allowed to test out of Beginning Music Theory. * Intermediate Orchestra This class is for string students who have at least one year of ensemble experience on their instrument and have solid instrument technique. This class explores more advanced ensemble skills, instrument specific techniques, and covers a wide range of musical styles. Students perform on the Winter and Spring concerts and are eligible for referral to the NMEA Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Most students benefit from performing in the Intermediate Orchestra for more than one season. Auditions are held before classes begin each semester, in August and January. 

 *Advanced Symphony Orchestra This class is an auditioned group of wind, string, piano and percussion instruments, for students with well-established technique and solid ensemble experience. The students work on more advanced repertoire of varying styles and cover more material than the intermediate groups. The students are eligible for referral to the NMEA All-State Orchestras and Solo and Ensemble Festivals and perform occasionally at community events or festivals. Auditions are held before classes begin each semester, in August and January. 

*Advanced Chamber Strings  This is an auditioned group of string players with well-established technique and solid ensemble experience. The students work on more advanced repertoire of varying styles in a double quartet style chamber group. The students are eligible for referral to the NMEA All-State Orchestras as well as the CCSD Solo and Ensemble Festival and perform occasionally at community events or festivals. Auditions are held before classes begin each semester, in August and January.

*Jazz Band (Electric/Upright Bass) The Jazz Band is an auditioned group that works on music in a fast-paced setting in the jazz style. Instruments of the Jazz Band include flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, drum set, string bass and piano. The Jazz Band is invited to perform on such events as community jazz festivals, parades, and the CCSD Solo and Ensemble festival. Auditions are held before classes begin each semester, in August and January.
